I can still hear the 8-bit theme song in my head, and I\u2019m guessing you can too, if you played\u00a0<em>Mario<\/em>\u00a0as a kid.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201c<em>Bah dat dat doo dat dat doo,<\/em>\u201d goes the classic, repetitive, 1985 jam. The ubiquity of those notes in many of our childhoods was as constant as a hug from grandma, a pack of Gushers after school, or Saturday morning cartoons. Retro games like\u00a0<em>Mortal Kombat<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Street Fighter<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>The Legend of Zelda<\/em>\u00a0are comfort food for gamers.<\/p>\n<p>Chris Schranck, aka\u00a0<a class=\"external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.twitch.tv\/futuremangaming\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.twitch.tv\/futuremangaming\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.twitch.tv\/futuremangaming&quot;}\">FutureManGaming<\/a>\u00a0on Twitch, says, \u201cI think a big part of playing retro games is just the feel of the game.\u201d Schranck, 33, played\u00a0<em>Mario<\/em>\u00a0as a kid in Missouri so much that his mom set an egg timer to limit his gameplay in the mornings before school. He\u2019s currently playing\u00a0<em>Batman: Arkham Knight<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cPlaying retro games,\u201d says Schranck, \u201cyou\u2019re happy to be feeling like a kid again. As an adult, you have all these responsibilities and anxieties, and if you can just find a way to forget about that, even just for 15 minutes, it can help. I think if you can find something, anything, that can help you feel good, that\u2019s a good thing. Retro games evoke these happy memories. Being a kid, opening up that new game or console on Christmas. How it looks, the beautiful pixel art. It\u2019s the nostalgia, and remembering being young again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Amanda Lim, a 25-year-old competitive gamer in Singapore, also loved\u00a0<em>Mario<\/em>\u00a0as a kid because it was \u201ccute and fun.\u201d But she prefers FPS games these days and is currently playing\u00a0<em>Valorant<\/em>.
