It was first published in 1845 and it is another great example of the use of alliteration. In his 1846 essay\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"font-size: 16px\" href=\"http:\/\/xroads.virginia.edu\/~hyper\/poe\/composition.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-content=\"http:\/\/xroads.virginia.edu\/~hyper\/poe\/composition.html\" data-type=\"external\">\"The Philosophy of Composition\"<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 16px\">, Poe claims to have written \"The Raven\" through a rigidly logical process, that comes into contrast with the \"spontaneous\u00a0creation\" theory as put forward by poets like\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"font-size: 16px\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Samuel_Taylor_Coleridge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-content=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Samuel_Taylor_Coleridge\" data-type=\"external\">Samuel Taylor Coleridge<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 16px\">. According to Poe, each poem should be written with a certain \"unity of effect\" into mind, a desired response that dictates everything, from theme to characters, language, tone and plot.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"post-body-7549985918790170006\" class=\"post-body entry-content\">\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<div class=\"separator\"><a href=\"https:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-vHs6Pa1q_b0\/XnNUb4ErRPI\/AAAAAAAAMZk\/AukeOFfpPJsGsdMFrNBykM9e618cNwROACNcBGAsYHQ\/s1600\/Poegif.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-vHs6Pa1q_b0\/XnNUb4ErRPI\/AAAAAAAAMZk\/AukeOFfpPJsGsdMFrNBykM9e618cNwROACNcBGAsYHQ\/s320\/Poegif.gif\" width=\"290\" height=\"320\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"440\" data-original-width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>The narrative of \"The Raven\" is told by an unnamed young man, who mourns for his lost lover, called Lenore. It is purposely set on a December tempestuous night, during which, the narrator is surprised by the unexpected visit of a black raven. The poem's dreamlike, otherworldly atmosphere makes the reader wonder whether the narrator has actually had an encounter with a mysterious bird repeating the word \"nevermore\" or the entire incident has been a product of his tormented imagination. Apart form poetry, he has also written famous tales of mystery and the macabre and he is considered to be the inventor of detective fiction, as well as a valuable contributor to the genre of science fiction.<\/div>\n<div class=\"font_8\">\n<div><\/div>\n<div>And if you like scary stories, you will really enjoy watching Tim Burton's and Rick Heinrichs' \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=pywaSyy00Rc\"><em>Vincent<\/em><\/a>, a short film dedicated to Edgar Allan Poe and Vincent Price, an American actor famous for his roles in horror films. (In fact, in 1963, Vincent Price starred in\u00a0The Raven, an adaptation of Poe's poem by Roger Corman.)<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<div class=\"font_8\">\n<div class=\"separator\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Did You know?<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0In the third episode (called \"Treehouse of Horror\") of\u00a0Season 2 of\u00a0<em>The Simpsons<\/em>, aired in 1990, we see an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=bLiXjaPqSyY\">adaptation<\/a> of \"The Raven\".
