Campus helps teachers to understand how the world is changing outside the school.<\/p>\n<p>TAYLOR MALI is one of the most well-known poets to have emerged from the poetry slam movement and one of the original poets to appear on the HBO series \u201cDef Poetry Jam.\u201d He is a four-time National Poetry Slam champion and the author of four books, including \u201cWhat Teachers Make: In Praise of the Greatest Job in the World.<\/p>\n<p>Watch the video and listen to Taylor Mali's slam poem while reading it all below<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Taylor Mali  What Do Teachers Make?\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VmVi6XjvkMU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"author\"><em>Taylor Mali<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"title\"><strong>WHAT TEACHERS MAKE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"epil\"><em>(Or, If Things Don\u2019t Work Out You Can Always Go to Law School)<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"line\">He says the problem with teachers is<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\"><em>What\u2019s a kid going to learn<\/em><\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">from someone who decided his best option in life<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\"><em>was to become a teacher?<\/em><\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">He reminds the other dinner guests that it\u2019s true<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">what they say about teachers:<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\"><em>Those who can, do; those who can\u2019t, teach.<\/em><\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">I decide to bite my tongue instead of his<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">and resist the temptation to remind the dinner guests<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">that it\u2019s also true what they say about lawyers.<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">Because we\u2019re eating, after all, and this is polite company.<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\"><em>I mean, you\u2019re a teacher, Taylor.<\/em><\/div>\n<div class=\"line\"><em>Be honest. What do you make?<\/em><\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">And I wish he hadn\u2019t done that<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">(asked me to be honest)<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">because, you see, I have a policy in my classroom<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">about honesty and ass-kicking:<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">if you ask for it, then I have to let you have it.<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">You want to know what I make?<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">I make kids work harder than they ever thought they could.<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">I can make a C+ feel like a Congressional Medal of Honor<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">and an A- feel like a slap in the face.<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\"><em>How dare you waste my time<\/em><\/div>\n<div class=\"line\"><em>with anything less than your very best.<\/em><\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">I make kids sit through 40 minutes of study hall<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">in absolute silence.\u00a0<em>No, you may not work in groups.<\/em><\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">No, you may not ask a question, so put your hand down.<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">Why won\u2019t I let you go to the bathroom?<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">Because you\u2019re bored.<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\"><em>And you don\u2019t really have to go to the bathroom, do you?<\/em><\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">I make parents tremble in fear when I call home:<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\"><em>Hi. This is Mr. Mali. I hope I haven\u2019t called at a bad time,<\/em><\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">I just wanted to talk to you about something your son said today.<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">To the biggest bully in the class, he said,<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">\u201cLeave the kid alone. I still cry sometimes, don\u2019t you?\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\"><em>And it was the noblest act of courage I have ever seen.<\/em><\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">I make parents see their children for who they are<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">and what they can be.<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">You want to know what I make?<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">I make kids wonder,<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">I make them question,<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">I make them criticize.<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">I make them apologize and mean it.<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">I make them write, write, write.<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">And then I make them read.<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">I make them spell\u00a0<em>definitely beautiful, definitely beautiful, definitely beautiful<\/em><\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">over and over again until they will never misspell<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">either one of those words again.<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">I make them show all their work in math<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">and hide it on their final drafts in English.<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">I make them understand if you\u2019ve got\u00a0<em>this<\/em>\u00a0[brains],<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">then you follow\u00a0<em>this<\/em>\u00a0[heart],<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">and if someone ever tries to judge you<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">by what you make, you give them\u00a0<em>this<\/em>\u00a0[the finger].<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">Here, let me break it down for you, so you know what I say is true:<\/div>\n<div class=\"line\">Teachers make a goddamn difference!
