Hip hop dance<\/b>\u00a0is a range of\u00a0street dance<\/a>\u00a0styles primarily performed to\u00a0hip hop music<\/a>\u00a0or that have evolved as part of\u00a0hip hop culture<\/a>. It is influenced by a wide range of styles that were created in the 1970s and made popular by\u00a0dance crews<\/a>\u00a0in the United States. The television show\u00a0Soul Train<\/a><\/i>\u00a0and the 1980s films\u00a0Breakin'<\/a><\/i>,\u00a0Beat Street<\/a><\/i>, and\u00a0Wild Style<\/a><\/i>\u00a0showcased these crews and dance styles in their early stages; therefore, giving hip-hop dance mainstream exposure.<\/p>\n

The dance industry responded with a commercial, studio-based version of hip-hop\u2014sometimes called \"new style\"\u2014and a hip-hop influenced style of jazz dance called \"jazz-funk\". Classically trained dancers developed these studio styles in order to create choreography from the hip-hop dances that were performed on the street. Because of this development, hip-hop dance is practiced in both dance studios and outdoor spaces.<\/p>\n

The commercialization of hip-hop dance continued into the 1990s and 2000s with the production of several television shows and movies such as\u00a0The Grind<\/a><\/i>,\u00a0Planet B-Boy<\/a><\/i>,\u00a0Rize<\/a><\/i>,\u00a0StreetDance 3D<\/a><\/i>,\u00a0America's Best Dance Crew<\/a><\/i>,\u00a0Saigon Electric<\/a><\/i>, the\u00a0Step Up<\/a><\/i>\u00a0film series, and\u00a0The LXD<\/a><\/i>, a web series. Though the dance is established in entertainment, including mild representation in theater, it maintains a strong presence in urban neighborhoods which has led to the creation of street dance derivatives like\u00a0Memphis jookin<\/a>,\u00a0turfing<\/a>,\u00a0jerkin'<\/a>, and\u00a0krump<\/a>. What distinguishes hip-hop from other forms of dance is that it is often \"freestyle\" (improvisational) in nature and hip-hop dance crews often engage in freestyle dance competitions\u2014colloquially referred to as \"battles\".<\/p>\n

Films, television shows, and the Internet have contributed to introducing hip-hop dance outside the United States. Since being exposed, educational opportunities and corporate dance competitions such as\u00a0World of Dance<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Hip Hop International<\/a>\u00a0have helped maintain its presence worldwide. Hip-hop dance can be a form of entertainment or a hobby. It can also be a way to stay active in competitive dance and a way to make a living by dancing professionally.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
