Roseanne Park (born 11 February 1997), known mononymously as Rosé (Korean: 로제), is a Korean-New Zealand singer and dancer[3][4] based in South Korea.[1] Born in New Zealand and raised in Australia, Rosé signed with South Korean label YG Entertainment following a successful audition in 2012 and trained for four years before debuting as a member of the girl group Blackpink in August 2016.
In March 2021, Rosé made her solo debut with her single album R. The album sold 448,089 copies in its first week, the highest for a Korean female soloist. Lead single "On the Ground" was also a commercial success, topping the Billboard Global 200 and peaking in the top five domestically.
Life and career
1997–2015: Early life and career beginnings
Roseanne Park (Korean: 박채영; Park Chae-young) was born on 11 February 1997[5][6] in Auckland, New Zealand, to South Korean immigrant parents.[7] She has an older sister. In 2004, at the age of seven, Rosé and her family moved to Melbourne, Australia.[8] She attended Kew East Primary School, graduating in 2009, and completed secondary education at Canterbury Girls' Secondary College in Melbourne, studying law.[4] She began singing and learned to play guitar and piano as a child and performed in church choirs.[8][4]
In 2012, at age 15, Rosé attended an audition in Sydney, Australia for South Korean record label YG Entertainment at her father's suggestion,[8] ranking first among 700 participants.[9][10] She enjoyed the label's music greatly, citing they had all the "cool" groups.[11] Within two months, Rosé dropped out of school, signed with the label as a trainee, and moved to Seoul, South Korea.[4] She initially presumed her father's idea was a joke due to the distance and difficulty of becoming a singer overseas, stating:
In Australia, I didn't think that there was much of a chance for me to become a singer, especially to become a K-pop star... I was living so far from the country that it never really occurred to me as a possibility.[8]
The same year, Rosé was given an opportunity to feature on labelmate G-Dragon's song "Without You" from his extended play (EP) One of a Kind (2012). Her name was not publicised at the time of release, her credit revealed only following her announcement as a member of Blackpink.[12] The song peaked at number ten on South Korea's Gaon Music Chart and at number 15 on the Billboard Korea K-pop Hot 100.[13][14]

Blackpink (Korean: 블랙핑크; commonly stylized as BLACKPINK or BLΛƆKPIИK) is a South Korean girl group formed by YG Entertainment, consisting of members Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa. The group debuted in August 2016 with their single album Square One, which featured "Whistle" and "Boombayah", their first number-one entries on South Korea's Gaon Digital Chart and the Billboard World Digital Song Sales chart, respectively.
Blackpink is the highest-charting female Korean act on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number 13 with "Ice Cream" (2020), and on the Billboard 200, peaking at number two with The Album (2020), which is also the first-ever album by a Korean girl group to sell more than one million copies.[1] They were the first Korean girl group to enter and top Billboard's Emerging Artists chart and to top the Billboard World Digital Song Sales chart three times.[2] Blackpink was also the first female Korean act to receive a certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) with their hit single "Ddu-Du Ddu-Du" (2018), whose music video is currently the most-viewed by a Korean group on YouTube.[3] Their 2018 song "Kiss and Make Up", a collaboration with Dua Lipa, was the first by a Korean group to receive a certification from the British Phonographic Industry (BPI)[4] and a platinum certification from the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA).[5]
Blackpink has broken numerous online records throughout their career. Their music videos for "Kill This Love" (2019) and "How You Like That" (2020) each set records for the most-viewed music video within the first 24 hours of release, with the latter breaking three and setting two Guinness World Records.[6] They are the first music group and Korean female act to have five music videos accumulate one billion views each on YouTube;[7] the most-subscribed music act on the platform; and the most-followed girl group on Spotify, with over 28 million followers as of February 2022.[8] Their other accolades include the New Artist of the Year Award at the 31st Golden Disc Awards and the 26th Seoul Music Awards, the Mnet Asian Music Award for Best Female Group in 2020, the first MTV Music Video Award won by a Korean girl group,[9] and recognition as the first female Korean group on Forbes' 30 Under 30 Asia.[10] They have been recognized by Forbes Korea as one of the most powerful celebrities in South Korea, placing first in 2019, third in 2020, and second in 2021.[11] In January 2021, Blackpink was credited by South Korea's President Moon Jae-in for spreading K-pop content across the globe and acknowledged.]
