The Statue of Alexander the Great

The Statue of the great Greek king riding his horse Bucephalus is one of the city's most popular sights.

The Statue of Alexander the Great was created by the sculptor Evangelos Moustakas in 1973. It is made of bronze and it is 6 meters tall, the tallest statue in Greece. People love to take pictures of the statue and it is a famous meeting place for skateboarders.

 

Exploring the Church of Aghia Sofia in Thessaloniki

The Church of Aghia Sofia in Thessaloniki is a beautiful ancient church.

It is made of stone and it has got a dome that is 55 meters high. It was built in the 8th century and, from 1204 to 1430, it was the town's cathedral. During the Turkish period, it was made into a mosque. Today, the church is open to the public for visits and people in Thessaloniki often use it to celebrate weddings.

The White Tower in Thessaloniki is a historic building that stands tall by the waterfront.

It is made of white stone and it is 29 meters tall. It was built in the 15th century and it was used as a fortress and later as aprison. Today, it is a museum where visitors can learn about the history of Thessaloniki and enjoy breathtaking views of the city and the sea.

Exploring the Rotunda in Thessaloniki

The Rotunda in Thessaloniki is a fascinating building with a rich history.

The Rotunda was built in the 4th century by the ancient Romans. It is a huge circular building about 30 meters tall, which is made of bricks. Its walls are 6 meters thick. In the past, it was a temple in the Roman times and a mosque in the Ottoman times. Today, the Rotunda is a Christian church and a sculpture museum.

The Umbrellas

The Umbrellas is a sight of Thessaloniki that catches the attention of every visitor.

The Umbrellas is a large sculpture at the waterfront of Thessaloniki. It was made by George Zongolopoulos and it was placed at the waterfront in 1997. Its 21 umbrellas are 13 meters tall and are made of steel. Local people and tourists visit the Umbrellas when they walk along the waterfront and they take pictures under the umbrellas.

The New Waterfront of Thessaloniki is a hot spot for tourists and locals alike.

The Waterfront of Thessaloniki is a large promenade about five kilometers long from the Concert Hall to the port. It has 13 different gardens, a shaded walk and a lot of sculptures. Local people and tourists enjoy the waterfront for walking, reading, running and playing with their children in the playgrounds. There is also a bicycle lane where people can ride their bikes and scooters. People often go there to see the sunset and, of course, to meet friends.

Exploring the Walls of Thessaloniki

The Walls are here to remind us of Thessaloniki’s rich past.

The walls of Thessaloniki are made of stone and brick. They were built in ancient times and they were made stronger in Byzantine and Ottoman times. Until the 19th century, they were eight kilometers long surrounding the city. Today, people can visit different parts of the walls such as the Trigonion Tower and the Gate of Anna Palaiologina.
