“Greenhouse gases” trap heat in the atmosphere and keep the Earth enough warm, for plants and animals to live, this is the “greenhouse effect. Land and water absorb most of the sunlight energy that warms up the Earth and then gives off energy in a different form called infrared radiation. A part of this energy travels back towards the outer space and greenhouse gases trap some of this. As people use energy burning fossil fuels which produce carbon dioxide, these extra gasses trap more heat and makes the planet warmer. This fact leads to changing rain and snow patterns, rising sea level, melting glaciers and ice sheets, etc.

Τhe greenhouse effect occurs when the sun heats the earth and it holds its heat and later releases it as a radiator into space. However, due to the greenhouse effect, it does not release all the heat. If the earth released all the heat there could be no life because the temperature would drop to -20 degrees Celsius.

Greenhouse effect: it is the natural process that warms the Earth’s surface. The process is called the greenhouse effect because the exchange of incoming and outgoing radiation that warms the planet works in a similar way to a greenhouse.
