Green Architecture Day
🌱 Day 2 – Sustainability & Green Architecture
Tuesday, February 24, 2026
Thematic Topic: Sustainable development, renewable energy and bioclimatic architecture
The second day of the Eco Culture Lab Erasmus+ mobility focused on sustainability, climate awareness and environmentally responsible urban design.
Students visited the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC), one of the most important cultural and environmental projects in Greece, where they participated in an experiential educational programme titled “Sustainable Planet.”

🎯 Objectives of the Day
The activities of the day aimed to help students:
- understand the role of renewable energy sources
- explore the concept of sustainable development
- learn how bioclimatic architecture can reduce environmental impact
- reflect on how cities can become more eco-friendly and sustainable
Students were encouraged to observe, discuss and investigate how modern buildings can combine culture, technology and environmental responsibility.
🌍 Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center
The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) is a major cultural, educational and environmental project located in Athens. It was designed by the internationally renowned architect Renzo Piano and hosts the National Library of Greece and the Greek National Opera.

The construction of the center follows principles of bioclimatic and sustainable design, making it a model for modern environmentally friendly cities.
Key sustainable features include:
🌞 Solar energy systems that help power the building
🌿 Extensive green spaces and gardens that support biodiversity
💧 Sustainable water management systems
🌬 Natural ventilation and energy-efficient architecture

The building is designed to work in harmony with the natural environment, reducing energy consumption and promoting sustainable urban living. For this reason, the SNFCC is often considered an example of how cultural institutions can contribute to the development of eco-smart cities. Find out more, here.
🔬 Educational Programme: “Sustainable Planet”

At the SNFCC, students participated in the experiential programme “Sustainable Planet,” which was designed by meteorologists from the National Observatory of Athens. During the programme, students explored the topic of climate change caused by human activity through a combination of theory, discussion and interactive activities.
The session included:
- explanations about climate change and its causes
- examples of how human intervention affects the climate system
- quizzes and interactive questions that encouraged critical thinking
- simple experiments and demonstrations that helped students understand environmental processes
Through these activities, students were able to connect scientific knowledge with real-world environmental challenges.

🌿 Exploring the Green Spaces of the SNFCC
After the educational programme, students participated in a guided walk around the Stavros Niarchos Park and the surrounding facilities.
During this exploration, they observed:
- the park’s Mediterranean plant landscape
- the green roof of the cultural center
- the integration of nature and architecture within the urban environment
Students discussed how such projects can help cities become more sustainable, resilient and environmentally responsible.

🌍 Learning Through Observation and Discussion
Throughout the visit, students actively engaged in observation and discussion activities, reflecting on an important question:
How can cities combine culture, architecture and sustainability in order to face environmental challenges?

The visit to the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center allowed students to see how innovation, science and architecture can work together to create a more sustainable future.
